This Saturday (15th of September) a professional tennis tournament played on indoor hard court St. Petersburg Open will be opened. It has been held annually at the Sports and Concert Complex (Gagarina pr.,8) in St. Petersburg, Russia, since 1995.
Many changes had happened for the 15 years of the ATP International tennis tournament St. Petersburg Open history: the prize fund increased from $300 000 to $1 000 000, new winners were awarded, new partners appeared... Only one thing remained the energy and passion for sport in everything connected with the tournament.
It is the first time since St. Petersburg Open started its existence that it is held in September, six weeks earlier than usually. This change is associated with ATP’s calendar reorganization and reducing the total number of ATP World Tour tournaments. St. Petersburg Open organizers managed not only to keep the tournament, but also to change its position in the calendar to a more advantageous one. Now there is a month between the two Russian ATP World Tour tournaments (in Moscow and in St. Petersburg), which means the Kremlin Cup and the St. Petersburg Open organizers don’t need to compete with each other inviting the tennis players.
